Real Madrid defeated their rivals to take a slender 2-1 lead into the second leg of this last-16 UEFA Champions League tie. Look back at the key action from the game with our Real Madrid vs Atlético Madrid stats report.
Real Madrid edged an entertaining derby match against Atlético Madrid to take a one-goal advantage into the second leg at the Metropolitano Stadium next week.
Rodrigo set the tie alight inside just four minutes, opening the scoring in the derby with a sensational strike. After working his way inside the box off the right wing, he cut inside before sending an unstoppable shot into the top corner past Atlético captain Jan Oblak.
It was a goal worthy of marking Real’s 500th match in the European Cup/Champions League (W301 D85 L113, including qualifiers), making them the first team in the history of the competition to reach this milestone.
Rodrigo’s opener was great, but Julián Alvarez’s 32nd-minute equaliser was arguably better. The Argentinean forward whipped a superb curling shot from just inside the box off the post to score his seventh Champions League goal of the season – only Diego Costa (8 in 2013-14) has netted more for Atlético Madrid in a single UCL campaign.
Real Madrid regained the lead after 55 minutes, with Brahim Díaz somehow finding a way past numerous Atlético players before firing past Oblak. After scoring in the weekend La Liga defeat to Real Betis, it was the first time that he’s scored in back-to-back appearances for Los Blancos since January 2024.
This is the sixth season that Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid have faced one another in the knockout stages of the European Cup/UEFA Champions League (including finals) and Real have won all five previous ties. Following this first-leg win, they have a good chance of making it six from six.
